Forest Connect

Reducing poverty by connecting small forest enterprises

Duncan Macqueen

Opportunities and constraints for a community cooperative in Sulawesi

This film artfully captures the compelling story of the community cooperative KHJL; how the communities implemented sustainable forestry practices within their teak forests, and as of 2005, successfully achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification - the first community teak forest in Indonesia to do so.

The Tropical Forest Trust (TFT) has been working with KHJL, and local partners like JAUH since 2003 to provide technical assistance and guidance on principles of sustainable forest management and business enterprise, and to build linkages from the communities to international timber markets. Since KHJL successfully achieved their FSC certificate in 2005, the cooperative has continued to grow and succeed - with drastic improvements in the number of members, hectares of forest and household income. But there are major issues of forest governance still to be overcome.
