Hi everyone,
I have a project I would like to share with you.
I am at this moment helping on the creation of a conservation area of around 31000 hectares, it is 11 hours by boat north from Iquitos, in the Fernando Lores district, province of Maynas, Loreto Region - Peru. The area is located at the right margin of the Tahuayo river and it is a place rich in biodiversity, that the surrounding communities use as source of food and sustenance. The idea is to create there a conservation area that could be managed sustainably in collaboration with the local communities, taking advantage of Non Timber Forest Products, eco-tourism activities and a possible REDD scheme.
By now, we have accomplished the first phase, that includes the Georeferenciation of the area and the legal procedures with the national government for the concession of the area for conservation purposes for the next 40 years. We are now entering into a second phase, were we have to summit a technical proposition for the whole area in the next 6 months, but we have run out of finance by now and we are looking for some partners that would like to joint us in this project.
The interesting thing is that the process already started, but time is running and we are about to loose this opportunity to make something important for the local communities and generate a positive impact on the environment at the same time.
Our idea is to create a partnership that involves local communities, NGO's, external financing and professional management, so that all the key elements are together in place to accomplish our goal: generate a conservation area that could be economically sustainable and that works as a vehicle to improve the living conditions of the communities that surround it.
So, let me know if you have any ideas of how to accomplish it!
All comments are more than welcome.
Thanks in advance!
