Reducing poverty by connecting small forest enterprises

CHAU

Can NTFPs value addition help both poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation?

reading some article, project or research about community-based enterprise can see clearly that NTFPs value addition help poverty reduction. However, it is not much study to link with biodiversity cnservation. My topic for thesis about those things, find out the potential NTFPs to add value for pro-poor and biodiversity conservation. Do you have any related article, case studies? Please share me, cause I am just a student, no have experience as you all. Thank you.

Dear Chau,

I have no idea on that but IUCN Vietnam had undertaken a lot of works related to NTFP and NTFP's Certified as well.

Hi CHAU Value Addition for TNFPs actually has a good potential in reducing poverty and even pressure on the forest resources. One organisation that has done work in this areas is the Gia/Nabio Agroforest Dev. Org a local Ghanaian NGO online at www.gnado.info. Also try the IUCN and Tree Aid based in the Netherlands and UK respectively.

Have you any contract at CIFOR.

Hi Chau,
Two people I know of ho have worked a lot on the commercialisation of NTFPS and the poverty impacts of this are Elaine Marshall and Kate Schreckenberg. I think both of them are on this network - so you might want to write a direct message to them to get a response.
Best wishes

HI Chau,
Yes, adding values to NTFPs helps to reduce poverty while at the same conserving biodiversity. In Liberia, working with forest communities to improve their small and medium NTPFs industries is contributing a lot to providing income for livelihoods support, and due to these income (CASH), they are taking the first to conserve biodiversity for future generation. Let me share with you what one farmer told me and I quote " Conservation without money for livelihoods support, is just conversation". So, please believe that it happensbut need to be carefully done so that one will not defeat the others.

Hi Mulbah,
Thank you for your comment. I am doing this research for my thesis. You may know many cases in your countries related to my research. Therefore, can you please share the way to conserve through value added of NTFPs, in another way, how can they conserve to ensure improve livelihood of local people? Thanks.
